The SCC School Board official accepted a resolution regarding standards based assessment and grading at the May 21, 2018 meeting.


St Croix Central Elementary uses standards based grading as a means to check the understanding of essential standards for each child. The purpose of the standards-based report card is to provide feedback that is more detailed so parents can see the progress their children are making toward specific end of the grade level targets/standards. This type of report card helps parents and students gain a better understanding of what’s expected at each grade level. The information from a standards-based report card better enables parents to guide and support their child in being successful in school. St. Croix Central Middle School and High School are both investigating standards-based assessment and reporting (SBA&R)l. If you would like more information, please refer to the SBA&R FAQ Document and/or the SBA&R presentation that was given during the community meeting on March 20, 2018.

ESSENTIAL STANDARDS, RUBRICS, AND LEARNING TARGETS

What is are standards? The Wisconsin Academic Standards are the first step in providing St. Croix Central School District students with a high-quality education. They specify what students should know and be able to do in the classroom. They serve as goals for teaching and learning.

What is an "essential standard"? An essential standard is something we guarantee every student will know by the end of grade level. These standards have endurance of knowledge or skill, require mastery to be ready for the next level, and can be leveraged across curricular areas. At SCC, these essential standards are based on the Wisconsin Academic Standards.

What is a "rubric"? A rubric is an easily applicable form of authentic assessment. A rubric simply lists a set of criteria, which defines and describes the important components of the work being planned or evaluated. A rubric should give clear guidelines to a reviewer on how to evaluate or "grade" a project presentation. Since the criteria for assessment are clearly defined in gradations from poor to excellent, different reviewers can arrive at similar conclusions when comparing a given presentation to each of the graduated criteria on a rubric. 

What is a "learning target"? Learning targets are short term goals or statements. Your learning targets should clearly state what you expect students to know and be able to do at the end of the lesson(s). At SCC we sometimes call these "I Can" Statements.
