State Wrestling Tournament 2011
St. Croix Central was lucky enough to be represented by three wrestlers at the 2011 State Wrestling Tournament in Madison. The tournament took place February 24-27th, at the Kohl Center. Wrestlers need to finish in the top three at the sectional tournament to proceed on to the state tournament.
Cody Nyhagen (152), Marcus Malecek (215), and Lauden Wood (Hwt.) gave valiant efforts against the states best in Division II. Nyhagen lost a first round match to Jackson Fox of Wrightstown 6-3. Fox later went on to lose in the finals in overtime placing second in the tournament. Wood also lost a tough first round match against Eric Gonwa of Campbellsport. Wood was giving up a decent amount of weight, having moved up from 215 to heavyweight for the tournament series. Malecek went 3-2 in the tournament placing him 4th in the state. Malecek won first round 2-1 in overtime over Adam Carlson of Edgerton. He lost second round to Riley Delzer of Oconto Falls 5-0 (Delzer later claimed the State title.) Malecek later rattled off two wins, 6-2 over Derek Fritch of Kiel and 4-2 over Brandon Clapper of Tri-County. Malecek lost the third place match to Shaun Robotka of Chetek/Prairie Farm 5-1 to bring home a 4th place medal.
Congratulations to the three wrestlers for representing SCC so well at the state tournament. Congratulations also to the entire wrestling team for a great season. They finished 24-3 in dual meets and claimed first place in three dual tournaments and a 4th place overall out of 37 teams at the Northern Badger Invite.
