Science

Science 9 - Year course - Grade 9    (Value: 1 credit for the entire year – Science)
This course provides students with a basic knowledge of science, as related to themselves and the world around them. A basic introduction to chemistry and physics will be stressed throughout the first semester, followed by a look into the different topics in earth science during the second half of the year. The course is designed to discover a broad perspective and develop an appreciation for many of the major branches of science.

Biology I - Year course - Grade 10   (Value: 1 credit for the entire year – Science)
This course is designed for students who want to discover a more detailed explanation of the human body and the world around them. Students will develop a basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology through hands on labs and interactive classroom activities. Background knowledge in biology and chemistry is helpful.   The course will also take a look outside of the human body and discover how the human race interacts with the biological world around us. Topics will vary from world ecosystems, to environmental conservation. Taxonomical keys will be used as well to help identify animals and plants living right here in western Wisconsin. Students who are interested in any human or biological studies in college will find this course be very useful in preparing for college courses of the same nature.

Biology II - Year course - Prerequisite: Biology I   *Intensive Homework*
Recommended for college - Grades 11- 12 (Value: 1 credit for the entire year – Science)
This course is designed for students who want to discover a more detailed explanation of the human body and the world around them. Students will develop a basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology through hands on labs and interactive classroom activities. Some of the dissections included are of pig hearts and skeletal muscles of a chicken.   Background knowledge in biology and chemistry is helpful.

Second semester the course will take a look outside of the human body and discover how the human race interacts with the biological world around us. Topics will vary from world ecosystems, to environmental conservation. Taxonomical keys will be used as well to help identify animals and plants living right here in western Wisconsin. Students who are interested in any human or biological studies in college will find this course be very useful in preparing for college courses of the same nature.

Chemistry - Year course - Prerequisite: Algebra I     *Intensive Homework*
Suggested Algebra II - Recommended for college – Grades 11 – 12
(Value: 1 credit for the entire year – Science)
Chemistry is a physical science, which deals with the composition of materials and the changes in composition, which materials undergo during a chemical change. Early in the course, elements, mixtures and compounds are studied in detail. The metric system is strongly emphasized and used exclusively. A course is considered as a college preparatory course and all work and assignments are given accordingly.

Modern Physics - Year course      *Intensive Homework* - Grade 12
Prerequisite: Must be scheduled for or have successful completed trigonometry.
(Value: 1 credit for the entire year – Science)
Physics is a profitable study for both boys and girls.  It deals with phenomena such as mechanics, electricity, sound, light, etc. Principles and applications of physical laws are studied and stressed both in problem solving and lab work. Particular emphasis is placed on problem solving and for this reason students are required to take at least one year of Algebra. Those who plan on a college career will find it necessary as a basic preparation for successful understanding of physical science courses.

Horticulture ES - Semester course - Grade 9-12
(Value ½ credit – Science Elective/Elective)
Horticulture is designed to provide students with a basic knowledge of fruit, vegetable and flower production. Many existing and new horticulture career opportunities will provide income, self-satisfaction, and rewarding jobs for future generations. Horticulture production applications will provide students with a practical knowledge for the study of plants.

The marketing and production of indoor and outdoor foliage plants, bedding plants, plants for food, potted flowers and cut flowers will provide experiences in greenhouse management. Special interest items are propagation of plants, growing plants in test tubes, genetic engineering and hydroponics.

Small Animal Veterinary Science ES - Semester course - Grades 9-12
(Value ½ credit – Science Elective/Elective)
